The difference between CLAT UG and CLAT PG

CLAT UG and CLAT PG– CLAT is an abbreviation for Common Law Admission Test. UG and PG after CLAT stand for Undergraduate and Postgraduate. 

Where, CLAT UG, is the exam for the students applying for Undergraduate law programs like- BA LLB, BBA LLB, and LLB and with CLAT PG, you can enroll yourself into Postgraduate Programmes related to Law like- LLM.

CONSORTIUM OF NLUs: 

The consortium is the governing body that administers, controls, and monitors the conducting of all Indian common entrance examinations for law i.e. CLAT. 

Currently, There are 22 NLUs offering UG programs and 19 are offering PG programs. 

Both the CLAT UG and CLAT PG tests conducted by The Consortium of NLUs is a pen and paper tests, Multiple choice questions are asked and Consortium does not expect the examinee in the CLAT UG to have previous knowledge related to law. According to them, CLAT is meant to evaluate the comprehension and reasoning skills and abilities of candidates. In the CLAT PG 2022, the paper will be based on the mandatory subjects from the undergraduate course and extracts will be provided from primary legal matters such as important court decisions. 

WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY OF CLAT UG AND CLAT PG:

As regards the minimum age criteria, there is no such age mentioned for CLAT UG 2022 and CLAT PG 2022.

The percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2 or an equivalent examination), the candidates must have secured:

Forty-five percent (45%) marks or its equivalent grade in the case of candidates belonging to the General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories. 

Forty Percent (40%) marks or equivalent in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.

For CLAT PG 2022 the student must have an LL.B Degree or an equivalent examination with a minimum of Fifty percent (50%) of marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to General/OBC/PWD/NRI/PIO/OCI categories and Forty-Five percent (45%) of marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.

OVERVIEW OF SYLLABUS OF CLAT UG AND CLAT PG: 

CLAT UG 2022 does not require prior knowledge. It aims to test the comprehension and reasoning skills of a student. CLAT UG 2022 is designed to test the aptitude and skills of a student while CLAT PG 2022 is going to put emphasis on the comprehension skills of a student. 

EXAM PATTERN OF CLAT UG AND CLAT PG: 

Both CLAT UG and CLAT PG are going to be a test of 120 minutes. 

1 mark will be rewarded for each answer marked correctly and 0.25 marks will be deducted for every answer marked incorrect. 

The difference lies in the number of questions and sections. 

In CLAT UG 2022 there will be 150 questions and in CLAT PG there will be 120 questions. 

CLAT UG will be divided into 5 sections whereas, in CLAT PG there is going to be just one section.

In the CLAT UG syllabus there will be 5 sections from which questions can be asked:

CLAT PG 2022 SYLLABUS 

According to the Consortium of NLUs, the paper will be based on the mandatory subjects of the undergraduate program and include Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law, and Labour & Industrial Law.

CLAT EXAM 2022 PREPARATION

The consortium plans on publishing study material like- guides, sample questions, and model question papers for the students to help them prepare better for CLAT UG 2022 whereas, for CLAT PG 2022, the Consortium expects the students to read and afresh their knowledge on important judgments, constitutional and legislative provisions.

IN CASE OF A BREAK OF TIE IN CLAT UG 2022 AND CLAT PG 2022

In case of a break of a tie in CLAT UG 2022:

  1. Higher marks in the component/section on legal aptitude in the CLAT 2022 exam;
  2. Higher age;
  3. Computerized draw of lots

Tie Breaker Rule in case of equal marks in CLAT PG 

The break of tie shall be by the following procedure and order:

  1. Higher age;
  2. Computerized draw of lots.

Current Affairs, including General Knowledge: 35-39 questions, or roughly 25% of the paper

Quantitative Techniques: 13-17 questions, or roughly 10% of the paper

Q: Can we use the calculator in the CLAT PG exam?

A: No, You are not allowed to carry any books, notebooks, watch calculators, pagers, calculators, cell phones, digital diary, any device with built-in calculator/memory, or any other electronics/ recording devices in the CLAT PG examination area. 

The rough work paper will also be provided to the candidate at the examination center.
